Are hip hop and reggae dying?

For the past years we have been seeing a serious decline in the sales of both hip hop and reggae music, coupled with a decline in both genre's influences.
Do you agree or disagree that the genres are dying? Is it time for changes in the content, sound or direction? Is free music download a factor?
What are your views on this matter? We would love to hear.

JAH Blessings contain no strife If People who have Vocal voice to Chant and sing they should only sing for Our King LORD GOD AllMighty who makes everything pipe and heared so if The days Of righteousness are coming about face the the wicked time is coming to its end we know what is good music when we hear it clearly In our Spirit Mind and Body music elevates The spirit Minds of men so if there is only ONE Spirit we must all come to Evolution In Music to be at peace with what we put our Being is what will come out GOD Bless you all !

The Mind of Men Is becoming Obsolete so will this present wicked World come to its End and this other Mind that sings of Love but Not GOD who owns it to Himself

HipHop has to die Into Reggae to Be Reborn again into its original Form Real Groundational Roots Reggae ( whic is a agathering of players of Instruments) True form of Gosple Worshiping comes and is derived from music is our Spirit in motion of Power Sound Light !!!.

Well reggae has never been a fast selling music or bing in the media forefrunt, Reggae has allways (apart from our shaba and sean pauls etc) been a music that was underground and most artists work off their live shows etc, So what has changed ? only people like myself amd others like me get a chance to sell their music on the net and market ourselves the way record companies used to do for the few reggae artists they signed, so really only the companies are complaining, I and all those who are unsigned and sell their music on the net and the streets are feeling the benefits of self government musically speaking. I know we still have those who are doing nothing to help themselves, sit down everyday hoping for a record deal etc, but in short i feel reggae wise we are better off, .
Reggae have and will allways be an influence to all popular music, remember reggae taught the world how to use basslines ,before reggae bass was not such a big part of popular music unlike now so the influence will never die
Blessed. Without meaning to create offense but as "Hip Hop" and "Reggae" are both in the singular, the prefix should be "IS".. rather than 'are'.
My answer is that reggae has come to a point where it cannot phase out or die. Not as long as I can still create my Dub Poetry or idren like Jah Billh, El Bib, Jungle Jim, Messian Dread and thousands upon thousands, who on a daily basis, hour by hour and minute by minute, create great Reggae and Dub riddims. The reason why the downslide in sales obviously is the internet, where millions of riddim is uploaded for free or as a showcase. I know as I do it myself. On sites like ReggaeDubWise, you can see how in 5 minutes, ten or more new songs appear. There is no scarcity in Reggae and never will be, especially now with the internet and sharing.
I cannot speak for HipHop but I guess they are in the same position as us in the Reggae domain.
I am RASTAFARI and my upfulment comes through Reggae. So, as long as I have livity ina mi life, it is my mission to keep Reggae alive and to make sure that the fire never dies.

Thanks Jah Rootsman it was an error we picked up on after the forum was actually posted. Should we change it now, it would mess up the link hence why it we have not corrected. Again thanks for your correction.

I agree with your point that the internet and free download is one of the main contributor to the decline in sales. It is my suggestion that producers of music (like yourself) should start thinking of offering only snippets of your latest work during the promotional process instead of offering complete downloads. It is unlikely that if someone download a song/album they will eventually purchase the song/album when it is officially released.

On the creative side of things: Everybody cannot be singing about the same things in the same manner it will eventually become mundane after a while. In the case of other genres an artist release an album then tour and you won't hear from them unless it is a feature or time for another album. In hip hop and reggae artist feel compelled to release song after song, mixtapes, etc just for fear that if they don't no one will remember them. It is time for CREATIVE CONTROL in both genres.

These suggestions however, will have to be a collaborative effort in which most (if not all) of the major players within the industry should adopt in order to save both genres/industries.
I agree in the commercial sense, that what passes for hip-hop & reggae now a days is stagnant and in need of some creative re-juvenation. However, as a reggae D.J./music presenter in Addis Ababa today, I can say, without a doubt, that the thirst for concious content has never abated. Downloading helps those who want to immerse themselves in the classics, and also those artists independent from the mainstream mediocrity have an opportunity to express themselves and find an audience...THOSE are the TWO who need to link. Those who seek the truth shall find it! And those of us who sing, chant, speak, or free-style flow over reggae OR hip-hop should be encouraged AND supported, especially when it is revealing the truth of these times in a positive, constructive and uplifting manner. NOT saying it has to be all rose-colored glasses, but even harsh truth can be delivered from an instructive, enlightened, empowered point of view, to the benefit of the entire human community. A wise man once said..."when one door is closed, another is open!"...NOW is when we should be looking into building our OWN media institutions with OUR interests at heart, NOT an entity that is out to destroy us.

Peace and Blessings in the name of our Father.... In my opinion Hip Hop nor Reggae will ever dye other than Rock ; pop and metal they r the foundation of today's music. Everyone rely on them both for the next trend of songs dance and fashion. Everyone is just looking for the next turn it will make. They have been allowing a select few to reign for the longest and now they regret doing that so to say the music is dying is just a kind way of saying we are tired of seeing the same ole people saying the same ole nothing and of'course the copy catz.. There r too many new coming artists in hip hop from never before seen areas and the same for reggae. The doors are more kinder these days and now those that have been getting love in multiple local areas are now getting the chance to travel abroad and those that have not had the local chance are now receiving. Music is life and the message is always carried in it no matter wat it is; so all music will be for-Iver.
Reggae will never die, not when you have artist like Toots Hibbert, Berres Hammond, Jah Cure, Sizzla just to name a few. Babies are singing Bob Marley song a legend that died so many years ago before they were even conceived. Reggae is dying? No star come again.
