Jimmy Carter has revealed on Monday that he doesn't think enough houses are being built to shelter the poorest in Haiti since the devastating earthquake ravaged the country's infrastructure two years ago.
In his interview with the Associated Press, the philanthropist and former US President said he has been noticing that only a small few houses are being constructed or reconstructed to accommodate the most needy Haitians.
"We haven't seen very much reconstruction of homes for low-income people," Carter said. "We have seen some the villas, some of the fancy homes along the beachfront being repaired. But there hasn't been much evidence yet of reconstruction of the homes in Port-au-Prince." Port-au-Prince is home to many of Haiti's low-income earners.
The Carters are currently in Haiti on a six-day mission to help volunteers build 100 homes for displaced Haitian families. The volunteers are hoping to have these home ready to be inhabited by February 2012.
Jimmy Carter along with his charity, Carter Center has long been supporting Haitians. In 2009 they launched a campaign to eradicate malaria and lymphatic filariasis.
Carter is expected to meet with Haiti's new president, Michel Martelly and Dominica's president, Leonel Fernandez before departing the country on Saturday.
