The police officers of Bihar in India, who overtime seized illegal arms are trying to transform the state plagued with gun violence by having these illegal weapons melted-down then turned into agricultural tools. The guns will be transformed into hoes, spades and hedge-clippers and will be later handed over to impoverished farmers in the east of India.
Bahir gained notoriety as being one of the most lawless and poorest region in the country.
"We are turning the tools of destruction for creation and development. The farming tools made from life-threatening arms will now produce food grains which will feed the hungry," said Abhay Anand, Director-General of Police in Bihar.
Currently over 200,000 weapons, seized during arrests and raids over the last few years will become tools to serve thousands of poor farmers, says the police.
Bihar is now India's proof of how an almost condemned and corrupt region can turnaround to promote infrastructure and development and providing security for its citizens.
Bihar has seen several road projects and moves to improve its economy, however the most visible sign of how much things have improved is that people in the region can now walk at night on the roads, a once unlikely move due to life threats.
Abhay Anand said turning these threatening weapons into useful agricultural tools was part of their on-going efforts to improve the security and lives of people in the state.
"Bad things don't die easily. These lethal weapons posed a constant threat. But now they are being destroyed for constructive purposes," he adds.
